Why logs fall short
Logs tell engineers what happened. Regulators and auditors need more: proof that the decision was allowed, grounded and approved, and that the record is complete and unchanged.
What an AI audit trail should record
- Inputs. The data, documents and sources the AI used, with versions and times.
- Actions. Every tool call and step the agent took.
- Rules. Which policies were checked and what each one decided.
- People. Who reviewed or approved the decision, and when.
- Outcome. The final decision and the reasons given.
- Context. Which model, prompt and agent version ran.
Making it tamper-proof
Verus fingerprints each decision with a cryptographic hash, signs it with a key held in secure hardware and time-stamps it. The result is a certificate anyone can check. Change one character and the check fails.
A quick self-test
Pick one AI decision from last month and ask:
- Can we show every source the AI used?
- Can we show which rules applied?
- Can we prove the record hasn’t changed?
- Can an auditor check it without our engineers?
If any answer is no, your audit trail has a gap. We can help close it.
